What Todays New Graduates Need To Know - Viewpoint Viewpoint careers advice blog
What Todays New Graduates Need To Know - Viewpoint This is the time of year that university undergraduates around the world start to prepare to take those daunting first few steps into the world of work. Hours of research and job applications, right at a time when the demands of completing a degree are reaching their peak in the final year of study. There are vast tomes of advice out there around âhow to start a career with a bangâ or âhow to successfully apply for (and maintain) a first jobâ. Yes, all of this is useful stuff, to an extent. But, as each year passes and the world of work changes even more, I have started to wonder how relevant some of this advice really is. I left university back in 1982 and back then, my career journey started with the grand total of four carefully hand-written letters to four companies I liked the look of. I got three interviews, two offers and selected one. Relatively painless, not a great deal of time spent and I was launched. But I wasnt alone and frankly my experience of the graduate job search back then seems to have been common with virtually everyone else. Todays world is totally different. Hours and hours of internet surfing for opportunities, endless forms, online role-plays, hundreds, yes hundreds of email or online applications and usually a deafening silence in return as prospective employers are inundated with a barrage of applications, many of which never even get acknowledged. No wonder itâs soul destroying. Its as if the explosion of information, choice and ease of application has actually made it significantly harder to get that first start in professional life. Things are still evolving at a rapid pace too. Many professionals in their late twenties now find that the wisdom they themselves learned when entering the jobs market not so long ago is now out-dated due to the impact of changing employer appetites, talent flows and emerging technology. Yet a lot of advice is still around today and has hardly changed in years. This must change. Surely we owe it to the next generation to give them the most current advice so that they have the best possible chance of making the best decisions at this early stage in their careers â" a stage, Iâm sure you would agree, which is often the most influential for so many reasons. So, if you are entering the world of work for the first time, or know someone who is, I hope you find my advice helpful. Equally, if you have any of your own thoughts to share, then I welcome you to leave your comments below. 1. Be open minded and adaptable now, and in the future Dont shoe-horn yourself into a role just because your degree is a typical feeder into that type of job. The world of jobs is changing ever faster and theres plenty of research to suggest that the majority of jobs we will be occupying in 15 yearsâ time havent even been invented yet. The fact is, a large number of people will be changing roles and sectors in our future world, probably several times, so dont be afraid to change to a sector that fascinates you right now. Iâve crossed sectors and roles myself â" from engineering through to energy and now recruitment â" but at all times Iâve followed those roles that let me explore the topics Iâm passionate about. So, rather than being pigeon-holed by your degree, really think about how the skills youâve acquired throughout your studies can be applied to a field that youâre intrigued by. The recent integration of skills that Ive witnessed in technology, marketing, design and engineering for example throws up opportunities to move into areas that previously may not have seemed logical. We now see huge demand for these sorts of skills in the fast-growing creative industries for example, and thats very different to the typical skills such sectors sought just a few years ago. So you may find that the financial prowess youâve honed in your accountancy degree could be just as valuable to an up-and-coming tech business, the music industry or anywhere else for that matter, as opposed to just a large consultancy firm. Remember though, this level of adaptability and open-mindedness isnât just relevant as you start out in your career. Because of the changing world of work and digitalisation, itâs pretty much impossible to predict what you will be doing in ten, twenty or thirty yearsâ time. So you absolutely need to keep open-minded and continue to be adaptable in order to achieve real, sustained success in the long-term. 2. Take your time to really consider your options At this early stage of your career, the choices you make will ultimately mould you into what you will become. I know that this may sound overly dramatic but itâs true. I can see how many graduates may feel that there is something of a race to find that first job out of university. After all, youâve just spent years in education and probably want to start making your way in the world and, importantly, you really want to start earning some money. Understandably, these are high priorities. But dont forget that the first few years of work after graduating will set the path for your future career, as it can become difficult to deviate from this track once the obligations of a home, family etc. come along in the future. To that point, I remember reading some interesting research conducted back in 2014, which stands true today. It found that a staggering two out of three graduates regretted accepting their first job offer. Do you really want to be in this position? To me, itâs a false economy. So, when considering that first job offer, remember that thereâs a lot you need to consider â" all of which will impact you now and in the future. Theres a real dilemma here though. In a world where getting a first job seems harder than ever before, isnt it better to just get any job, because at least that will help your journey to find the one you really want in the future, having demonstrated that you have the skills and attitude to be an asset to an organisation? Theres some truth in this in my mind and I will always look favourably on someone who has at least made a go of something, anything, rather than doing nothing. But dont fall into the trap of assuming that starter job is anything more than just an entree into the world of work and use it to the fullest to get the role you really want, because that ârightâ job will build the foundations of your long-term career, equip you for the future, and ensure you stand head and shoulders above the rest, in an increasingly competitive job market. 3. Learning doesnât stop just because youâve graduated Graduating is just a step along the way of a lifetime of learning. You simply canât afford to end your education the moment youâre handed a degree. It just doesnât work like that anymore. I believe that the next decade will belong to hybrid professionals â" people with qualifications for traditional roles running in parallel with new and emerging skillsets, combined with strong soft skills. This mixture demonstrates to employers that you can be deployed across a range of projects. It also demonstrates that you have the knowledge base to communicate with specialist colleagues and understand the potential â" or limitations â" of the assistance theyâre able to provide. For instance, a marketer with Java or HTML5 coding skills will be able to liaise with web developers and easily grasp whether their teamâs latest online marketing idea is feasible. But donât just think AI and blockchain. Understanding how to run a productive brainstorm session or how to deal with an under-performing team member are just as vital skills as the purely technical ones that formal education tends to imbue in us. You should never allow yourself to stop learning. Ultimately, continuous upskilling should feel like a habit, rather than a chore. And this is something you and only you can instill in yourself â" so its never too early to start. There are a host of online courses, live events or even teach-yourself podcasts available across a variety of subjects. My advice would be to read widely, consider how your chosen industry is likely to change over the next five years and what you can learn from other sectors that may point to the future of your own. In my view, every industry that exists today will be profoundly impacted by the inventions and discoveries we make in the next five to ten years. When I graduated in 1982 I joined the oil industry, seemingly safe in the knowledge that we would always need energy and fuel and that my future was therefore secure. Today, you cannot make that assumption. Blockchain will revolutionise financial services and entire supply chains. Genetics and bioengin eering will transform the role of healthcare professionals and their industry. Cars will be electric and driverless so the transport industry will look very different. Administration tasks will be automated by robots. Nothing will be as it was and nothing can be taken for granted anymore, so you need to keep your skills relevant to the world we become. But learning doesnât start and end with technical skills. Soft skills are becoming ever more important. If a robot can do the processing job that a human brain used to be employed for, then things like strong intuitive skills, creative flair, relentless proactivity and a positive attitude will really set you apart from the others, both humans and machines. These things tend to be innate within people and hard to teach. So, as you take your first steps into the world of work, take every opportunity to recognise which soft skills you have, and hone them as you go to make you unique. And never forget that last point. You are unique. Sometimes it can seem like you are just one of thousands and thousands of similar people, all applying for that one job. But the fact is, they are all different from you and its your job to understand what makes you different and more suitable than the competition. Focus on what value you can bring to a prospective employer, not how you stack up to others in the field. A word here for employers too, because many of you are missing a trick. Dealing with a tsunami of applications is a daunting task. Many have therefore sought to automate the process in some way, filtering the incoming applications via some form of online assessment tool. Many of the banks for example now have online role-play scenarios that they invite prospective applicants to conduct, and these act as a filter through to the job application itself. It all sounds very good in theory, but Im not sure its the best way to find that unique talent that will make your company hum. I was amused when a good friend of mine, a senior executive in the financial services world, actually took one of these tests himself, just to see what was expected of young people applying to his and his competitors organisations. Despite thirty five years of experience in the industry, having seen almost every conceivable issue across that time and occupying a position at the top of the tree, his system deemed him unsuitable for a graduate intern job. How many other future superstars had been eliminated by the computer before they were even given a chance? So, employers, look deeper for the unique nuggets that will make your business fly and dont rely on software tools that look for the lookalikes. 4. Appreciate the benefits temp or contract roles could bring you Temp or contract roles are much more than simply providing convenient stop-gap jobs while searching for a permanent position. If youâre fresh out of university, temp or contract work can be a fantastic way to refine your skillset and sample different opportunities. Itâs also a great way of building your CV if you are lacking in experience. By moving from project to project, you should also build a strong network of professional contacts, which can either result in a steady flow of additional contract work or even a full-time position further down the line. At the same time, long-term contract work can also be very lucrative and enjoyable. Freelancers often enjoy higher day rates than employees in permanent positions and can focus on what theyâre best at and most enjoy, free from the distractions of traditional office politics. 5. Donât ever lose your sense of adventure Youâve just spent some amazing years at university â" some say these are the best days of your life and in many ways I tend to agree. You will have learnt so many things and met so many people. Your eyes will have been opened to the world and everything it has to offer. So, my last piece of advice is to never lose that sense of adventure that youâve no doubt developed over the past few years. Approach this next stage of your career journey with enthusiasm, creativity and an unwavering positive spirit. All of these things will stand you in good stead to stand above the rest in what is, and will continue to be, an unpredictable world of work. Entering the world of work for the first time can prove daunting, but it should also be exhilarating. The jobs market is currently in one of the most exciting phases Iâve ever known. Roles that have stayed the same for decades are being redefined by advances in technology and fresh practices like flexible or remote working, and, at the same time, entirely new roles are being created. Amidst all this change, itâs not enough to rely on age-old advice that served your parents or older siblings well. Neither should you take a scatter-gun approach to job applications either. Are you really deeply fascinated by the one hundred companies you are about to send your CV to on a mass email campaign? No, so carefully consider the career path that youâre really interested in. Understand what youâre passionate about and devise a career plan that focuses on this. Take small yet consistent steps towards the direction and field you want to move your career in. Seek out and talk (talk, not email or WhatsApp) to people in those businesses and ask them about it and about opportunities there. Youll be amazed at the sort of response you may get. This should stop you sleepwalking into an ultimately unsatisfying role and getting stuck there. And, lastly, I recommend graduates set about really understanding the fresh challenges facing their area of expertise and think how you can stand out from the crowd. The candidates who grasp the issues of today are often those invited for an interview tomorrow and more than likely the ones who enjoy a varied and fulfilling career. About to start your job search? The normal work week today is 47 hours, and 21 percent of Americans work somewhere in the range of 50 and 59 hours per week. A further 18 percent of Americans work 60+ hours seven days. U.S. Army Weight Standards For Men
U.S. Armed force Weight Standards For Men U.S. Armed force Weight Standards For Men The Army is updating the wellness strategic growing new principles for strategic wellness and wellbeing and health. The standard PFT of pushups, situps, and a 2 mile run will before long be supplanted with an increasingly thorough test that really challenges the warriors in all the components of wellness other than chest area quality and cardiovascular continuance. Presently the test additionally tests leg quality and force, chest area force and muscle endurance, hold, center quality, and speed and readiness. The new activities that supplant and add to the test are: Trap Bar Dead Lift, Shuttle Run (with convey, drag, run occasions), hanging knee ups, hand discharge pushups, and full body power creation utilizing medication balls. This new physical wellness test is being tried now and will be Army wide in 2020. The stature/weight norms can be discovered utilizing the Army number cruncher in a hurry Army official site. Reference AR 600-9 Weight Charts and Body Fat Measurements Having work in the United States Armed Forces requires the candidates, enlisted people, and well-trained/reservists to fulfill certain guidelines of wellness and health. Part of the wellbeing screening is to gauge your tallness and weight and if that doesn't satisfy the guidelines inside the Army, you will have an auxiliary estimation of the Tape Test - utilizing a measuring tape on the abdomen and neck. U.S. Armed force officers are dependent upon physical requests. Subsequently, the Army has declared weight and muscle to fat ratio guidelines to ensure singular officers are fit as a fiddle to address the difficulties of Army administration. The muscle versus fat guidelines supplanted the Armys weight necessity in 2013. They are intended to represent fighters who are heavier than permitted by Army weight tables, yet who have low degrees of muscle to fat ratio. The norms apply just to warriors who as of now are a piece of the U.S. Armed force. Newcomers have various norms. Armed force Weight Standards and Screening Process U.S. Armed force officers are screened at least like clockwork to ensure they fulfill the muscle to fat ratio guidelines. Fighters are gauged, and leaders utilize a weight-for-stature table to decide whether a warrior fulfills the guideline. For men, the weight-for-stature prerequisites convert to a weight list (BMI) rating of at any rate 19. Weight record, or BMI, is determined by isolating your weight (in kilograms) by your stature (in centimeters squared). A BMI of under 18.5 is viewed as underweight and over 24.9 is viewed as overweight, as per the National Institutes of Health. Male fighters between ages 17 and 20 must have a BMI of 25.7 or less; men 21 to 27 years of age must have a BMI of 26.4 or less; men ages 28 to 39 must have a BMI of 27.1 or less; and male warriors ages 40 and more established must have a BMI of 27.5 or less. One of the least exact strategies to quantify someones muscle to fat ratio/slender bulk is using the BMI protocol. However, for those with more prominent bulk than fat that slant the aftereffects of this test, there is another alternative to be estimated utilizing the Army endorsed strategy for muscle versus fat estimation - The Circumference Test. On the off chance that a warrior bombs the initial segment of the screening (the say something and keep an eye on the weight-for-tallness table), at that point authorities may coordinate a muscle to fat ratio evaluation. On the off chance that the fighter additionally bombs that evaluation, at that point he will be joined up with the Army Body Composition Program. Administrators likewise have the power to coordinate a muscle versus fat evaluation on any Soldier that they decide doesn't present a Soldierly appearance, whether or not or not the Soldier surpasses the screening table load for their deliberate tallness, as per the guidelines. Special cases to Army Weight Standards There are a few exceptions to this guideline that can apply to men, as per AR 600-9: Fighters with significant appendage misfortune. Significant appendage misfortune is characterized as a removal over the lower leg or over the wrist, which incorporates full hand as well as full foot misfortune. It does exclude halfway hand, foot, fingers, or toes.Soldiers on built up proceeded training for deployment or potentially proceeded on dynamic Reserve statusSoldiers who have experienced drawn out hospitalization for 30 constant days or greater.New recruits. These initiates, paying little mind to part, will have 180 days from section to dynamic assistance to meet the maintenance muscle to fat ratio norms set up in this guideline. Armed force Body Fat Assessment Armed force Regulation 600-9 states that Males are permitted the accompanying Body Fat Standards. Be that as it may, all personnel are urged to accomplish the more rigid DOD objectives which is 18 % muscle to fat ratio for guys and 26 % muscle to fat ratio for females. The most extreme suitable muscle to fat ratio in men is: Age Group 17-20: 20% Body FatAge Group 21-27: 22% Body FatAge Group 28-39: 24% Body FatAge Group 40: 26% Body Fat Bombing tallness/weight and muscle to fat ratio gauges have an expense. Armed force faculty who are overweight, or more awful large, including Soldiers who become pregnant while on the weight control program are not promotable to the following higher position, won't be allocated to order initiative positions, and are not permitted to go to proficient military preparing schools. Not satisfying the guideline can cost you profession upgrading openings that may just be offered once in a while. The Circumference Test The muscle to fat ratio is dictated by estimating the officers neck perimeter and stomach outline multiple times each, and afterward taking away the normal neck boundary from the normal stomach circuit. These figures, joined with the officers tallness in inches, permits the trooper playing out the computation to acquire the complete muscle to fat ratio. Tragically, the boundary test to decide muscle to fat ratio isn't the most precise proportion of techniques. Be that as it may, the rates to bomb the muscle to fat ratio test in the Army is fair. Of course, individuals who are marginal bombing will dissent, however muscle versus fat in the 20 rate territory is high for such a hazardous calling as a military part where your life or your buddys life may rely upon your physical capacity to hold yourself or others our of damages way. Why You Dont Need To Be Original To Have a Business That Stands Out - When I Grow Up At the point when I ask customers/companions/individuals on the road who let me converse with them what makes them amazeballs, I typically get a great deal of trims/haws/feet rearranging. I additionally generally get, Well, not much or anything⦠.I mean, dislike I can do whatever any other person can't do. This is the place steam comes out of my ears and my head detonates and my voice gets significantly stronger than expected (the way that I can't get my voice lower than a 7 is a piece of my uniquity). I begin discussing The Creative Habit and how, when Twyla was posting her Five Big Fears, she had this to state under Somebody has done it previously: Nectar, its all been done previously. Nothings extremely unique. Not Homer or Shakespeare or unquestionably not you. Get over yourself. That is to say, consider the way that basically all that we do falls under a specific sort: tap moving is called Tap Dancing since it's a particular kind of moving that is set up in light of the fact that such huge numbers of individuals have done it previously. Presently, it's not to state that you were unable to make another sort of moving â" Sherfurffle Dancing, possibly? â" yet truly, how about we ease the heat off here, individuals. Let me demonstrate this to you by The Google Test. Type in inventive profession mentor in Google and see what pops up past the advertisements. Presently open up the sites of each and every individual who appears on the primary page there ought to be 5 of us. As you click from tab to tab, ask yourself: whats this people individual and expert experience? whats the tone of their duplicate? what are they utilizing in their marking? how would they explicitly bring in cash? what showcasing streams would they say they are utilizing? Youll come to see that theres once in a while cover here. Without a doubt, possibly we as a whole utilize an easygoing voice in our copywriting. Perhaps our image hues share a comparative shade. Possibly were all on Instagram. However, would we say we are no different? It is safe to say that we are even mostly the equivalent? Do you resound with everyone, or are their sure individuals you jive with and others you dont? That is the magnificence of marking and advertising dependent on your uniquity. At the point when you put yourself out there genuinely and actually own your own story, experience, peculiarities and range of abilities, you promptly stand out and draw in your ideal individuals. What's more, you dont even need to grow a subsequent head to do it! At the point when somebody promptly repudiates what makes them stick out, I usually hear: In any case, everybody can heat an extraordinary chocolate chip treat without any preparation! Someone or other as of now has a profession as an inside originator who takes into account understudy, so there's not space for me to do that, as well! Without a doubt, I can assemble an incredible outfit that is runway-commendable, however dislike anybody's going to pay me for that! This industry is so soaked, dislike I can be a specialist here. I gotta tell ya, I can't heat an incredible chocolate chip treat without any preparation or something else, there's very more space in the apartment stylistic layout field for 2 (or 20!) originators, I paid somebody to assist me with assembling executioner outfits, and we as a whole gotta start some place! So whenever you get asked what makes you exceptional, you can tidy off your treat dish, your cot configuration sheets, and your Vogue-commendable groups, knowing that your uniquity is, just and effectively, what makes you really you.

YOURE FIRED! Will you do us a favor and sign this before you go
YOURE FIRED! Will you do us a favor and sign this before you go Employers talk about not getting loyalty from the workforce, but guess who created that environment (hint: it rhymes with m-plaw-r)? All of the ra-ra team spirit stuff is fun, but when you get terminated what happens to those hours of team-building warm fuzzies? Should they evaporate? I guess the employer misses that part sometimes, when they FIRE you, you will be upset, and perhaps even see them and their team building exercises as hypcrotical at best. I had never been let go before so when it was my turn I wasnt that savvy on what or how to negotiate. I walked away with a severance that was okay, I thought. But man it runs out fast! It would have been nice to have someone walk me through this process to help me understand that (a) it would take longer than I think to get a job, (b) perhaps I could have negotiated for some important things, and (c) be careful what you sign! Instead of telling you what I signed (long story) Ill share the experience of a buddy from last week. He got terminated and was given a great offer: If you sign this one-year non-compete, well give you two weeks of severance. Great offer? What the heck are they thinking (they probably need to take the A-hole Rating Self Exam test ;))? Two weeks of severance (remember, you still get taxes and all the goodies taken out) just to promise that you wont compete with them? Unbelievable. Now that is a company that really respects its employees not! It should be noted that this one employ can recreate what the company has, but do it better, and knows all the places to market it, and market it better! What are some of the things that you have seen, or been through, or heard of? What do you recommend people do when they get terminated? What should we watch out for? Share your thoughts here this is a tough issue and I have no answers (but I can smell a crappy offer a mile away). YOURE FIRED!
